In this project we will ask what regulates the appearance and production of hematopoietic stem cells during embryonic development in the mouse and whether these processes also take place in the adult.

Hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) are powerful cells that can give rise to all the major blood cell types. Interestingly, HSC are thought to be derived from a population of endothelial, or blood vessel lining, cells during a very narrow window of embryonic development. We will ask, what leads these rare endothelial cells to suddenly change their cell fate and become blood cells and whether this process also takes place in the adult under stress conditions.
This topic is also available for Honours students.
Methodologies used in this project will include embryo analysis, flow cytometry, immunostaining and gene profiling.
