Investigation through molecular dynamics simulations the surface features that optimise the detachment and roll-off of liquid droplets.

The detachment of water droplets from structured surfaces is important in many technological applications, such as the collection of atmospheric water. The dynamics of water detachment can be investigated in silico, where different chemical and geometrical patterns can be designed to optimise both water condensation onto and detachment from a surface. We will develop new approaches for the fabrication of nanostructured surfaces, and we will investigate their potential applications. In this project we will expand on our recent discovery of micropatterned surface coatings for water capture. The project primarily involves performing computational experiments using a molecular dynamics, in collaboration with Dr Asaph Widmer-Cooper in the School of Chemistry and Prof Shaun Hendy at the University of Auckland. Matching experiments using advanced surface structuring techniques will be performed both in collaboration with other members of the lab and through external collaborations.
