Development (design and fabrication) of a microwave catheter for cardiac ablation to treat ventricular tachycardia, a life threatening heart rhythm disorder which is a common cause of sudden death. The project will involve catheter construction, bench testing of thermal ablations in gel models, simulations, and validation in large animal experiments. The student will work closely and be closely mentored by an engineer at the Cardiology Workshop, and be supervised by A/Prof Stuart Thomas, A/Prof Aravinda Thiagalingam and Dr Pierre Qian, Physician Cardiologists at the Department of Cardiology, Westmead Hospital in conjunction with Prof Alistair McEwan, Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology, USYD.
