Synopsis

A unique large, 1 metre diameter, ring shear apparatus has been developed at the University of Sydney to investigate interface behaviour. Recent theoretical developments have highlighted the role of particle crushing in the mechanical response, and this is particularly relevant for shearing adjacent to interfaces. The large ring shear device is an ideal apparatus for investigating the crushing behaviour as it enables the interface to be subjected to very large displacements. The project will involve modification to the apparatus to allow visualisation of the soil and a series of tests with different soils and particulate materials. This will enable the evolution of particle grading and crushing to be quantified and the impact of this on the mechanical response to be better understood.
