Prehabilitation and metabolic optimisation before elective surgery

Summary

This project investigates the effects of pharmacologic and lifestyle-based prehabilitation including GLP-1 agonists on surgical outcomes in obese patients.

Supervisor

Professor Thomas J Hugh.

Research location

North Shore - Kolling Institute of Medical Research

Synopsis

Obesity is an established risk factor for postoperative complications and hernia recurrence. With the rise of effective medical weight-loss therapies, there is a new opportunity to evaluate structured preoperative optimisation programs. This project will prospectively assess weight-loss interventions before elective hernia and hepatobiliary surgery, measuring their effect on intra- and postoperative outcomes, recovery, and recurrence. It will also explore patient adherence and cost-effectiveness, supporting evidence-based guidelines for prehabilitation.

Additional information

Ideal for a student interested in metabolic medicine, perioperative optimisation, and applied clinical research. Lead Supervisor: Professor Tom Hugh Co-Supervisor: Professor Sarah Glastras
