Patient-centred 'textbook outcomes' in major surgery

Summary

This project develops and validates a patient-centred 'textbook outcome' measure combining traditional clinical endpoints with recovery and quality-of-life data.

Supervisor

Professor Thomas J Hugh.

Research location

North Shore - Kolling Institute of Medical Research

Synopsis

'Textbook outcome' metrics have emerged as holistic measures of surgical success but often neglect long-term patient experience. This project will analyse prospective surgical audit data to refine outcome definitions, incorporating patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) and functional recovery data. Students will evaluate predictors of achieving textbook outcomes and compare results across surgical subspecialties. The work aims to inform performance benchmarking and value-based health care in surgery.

Additional information

Best suited to candidates interested in surgical outcomes research, health services evaluation, and data analytics.
