Long-term oncologic value of minimally invasive liver surgery

Summary

This project compares long-term survival and recurrence outcomes between open and minimally invasive liver resection approaches.

Supervisor

Professor Thomas J Hugh.

Research location

North Shore - Kolling Institute of Medical Research

Synopsis

While minimally invasive liver surgery is increasingly adopted, its long-term oncologic equivalence remains under-evaluated. Using a 20-year institutional dataset of hepatectomy cases, this project will compare recurrence, disease-free survival, and quality-of-life outcomes between open, laparoscopic, and robotic approaches. Multivariate and propensity-matched analyses will adjust for tumour type, stage, and adjuvant therapy. The project will generate evidence to guide surgical practice and inform future prospective trials.

Additional information

Ideal for candidates with interests in hepatobiliary surgery, data analytics, and clinical outcomes research.
