This programme of research aims to take our knowledge of the structure and function of the mind, and apply this knowledge to maximise students’ learning. When instructional materials don’t take such factors into account, students often experience cognitive overload, harming learning. This programme of research uses experimental research methods to test hypotheses drawn from Cognitive Load Theory (e.g. Sweller, 1999) and the Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning (e.g. Mayer, 2001). Areas of current interest are the effects on learning of inductive training, gesturing, imagination, and personalisation.
