This research examines students’ understanding of key mathematical concepts as well as the processes involved in the learning of mathematics in early childhood and among primary-aged children.
The mathematical abilities of young children have been found to be more advanced than traditionally thought. Despite this, mathematics programs designed for the early years of school typically underestimate students' abilities quite significantly. This area of research examines aspects of children’s mathematical thinking – including their mental computation strategies, number sense and related processes – to better understand how these develop.
