Neuroprotection: protecting the central nervous system (retina and brain) from degeneration

Summary

Using rodent models and clinical trials, we are exploring strategies to protect the retina and brain from degeneration, in models of age-related macular degeneration, Alzheimer-like dementias and Parkinson's disease.

Supervisor

Professor Jonathan Stone.

Research location

Camperdown - Central Clinical School - Save Sight Institute

Program type

Masters/PHD

Synopsis

We are exploring the effectiveness of three increasingly well established neuroprotectants - dietary saffron, photobiomodulation and remote ischaemic preconditioning. Each show remarkable ability to slow degenerations in models of these three diseases, and a clinical trial of saffron in AMD (age-related macular degeneration) has begun.
