Dynamic effects in soil (A) – Rapid penetration of objects into clays.

Summary

The objective of this project is to perform a series of experiments to improve our understanding of rate effects in clays.

Supervisor

Professor David Airey.

Research location

Civil Engineering

Program type

Masters/PHD

Synopsis

The project will concentrate on free falling penetrometers, which are used in offshore site investigation, and have been proposed for remote site (e.g. lunar) investigation. To provide reliable interpretation of soil strength and stiffness greater understanding of the effects of high rates of loading on the soil response are needed. This will be achieved by an experimental parametric study of the penetration tests and associated element tests performed at high strain rates. Results of experiments will be compared with the predictions of dynamic, large displacement finite element analysis.
